Mediation - Sturgeon Law, canmore

What is Mediation?

Mediation is non-adversarial, co-operative decision making process in which the neutral mediator assists parties in resolving conflict and disagreements that have arisen between them.

Why should I try Mediation?

Mediation allows you and the party you are in conflict with to have control over the resolution of your conflict. Mediation provides a safe and confidential environment for the parties to resolve their issues without the pressure and stress of litigation.

Who does the mediator work for?

When you come to my office for a Mediation session, both parties are my client. I am neutral, and will not advocate for one side or the other in any way. What I will do is help you find a way to communicate with each other so that you can resolve your conflict in a way that works for both of you.

What if my ex and I can’t stand each other?

Mediation works. My job is to facilitate your conversation and help you cut past all the personal conflict so that you can reach an agreement on how to divide your property, care for your children, and resolve any spousal or child support issues. You will be surprised at how simple it can be to focus on the practical aspects of separating when there is a Mediator present to help focus you.

How much does it cost?

I invoice my Mediation sessions on an hourly basis. Each party shares the costs (unless one of you agrees to be responsible for the whole cost). Once you have reached an agreement, I prepare a memorandum that your lawyer can use to draft your separation agreement. This is a more cost effective way of coming to an agreement than each of you paying a lawyer to negotiate your agreement.

Is Mediation just for family law?

No. I offer mediation services in all areas. I can help you settle disputes with a business partner, tenant or landlord, employee... the situations are endless. Mediation is an effective alternative to going to Court, so think of giving it a try before you file a Statement of Claim.
